Radio Caroline

Radio Caroline is a hybrid national digital radio station and web radio based in the United Kingdom, broadcasting on AM 648 kHz, DAB. Owned by Radio Caroline Limited and operating since March 1964, the station broadcasts an Album-Oriented Rock format in English.

Daily programming avoids standard chat. Presenters like Rob Ashard on Listener Top 15s and Gary Ziepe on The Mellow Show focus on tracks picked by listeners.

The rotation skips mainstream chart singles for deep album tracks. Core selections feature classic artists like The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and The Beatles.

Audience data points to two main reasons people tune in: the station's pirate radio roots and the complete lack of commercial interruptions. Funding relies on listener subscriptions and donations instead of ad spots.

The station famously broke the BBC music monopoly back in the 1960s. In April 2026, it ranked second in a UK Intellectual Property Office public poll celebrating historic British trademarks.

Reception has limits. The AM signal can drop out, and the rock-heavy format offers little variety for listeners wanting modern pop.

Tuning into 648 kHz AM requires patience when weather conditions shift, while following schedule updates and ship maintenance on the Ross Revenge keeps the broadcast active and engaging.
